29-Year-Old African Nurse Fulfills Lifelong Dream, Earns Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine After Years of Perseverance

After years of financial struggle, rejection, and working through the COVID-19 pandemic, 29-year-old South African nurse Onazo Daniso fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a doctor by graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Onazo Daniso, a determined 29-year-old nurse from Lusikisiki, South Africa, has achieved her lifelong ambition of becoming a medical doctor by graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, overcoming financial hardship, rejection, and the pressures of frontline healthcare work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Raised in a rural community where healthcare was scarce, Onazo aspired to become a doctor from a young age but faced mockery and discouragement. After being rejected from medical school despite meeting the requirements, she enrolled in a nursing program at the University of the Free State, working tirelessly through financial struggles and eventually completing her degree in 2018.

Even after becoming a qualified nurse, she couldn’t shake the desire to do more for her patients. She began saving aggressively, paid off her bursary obligation, and finally enrolled in medical school in 2019, all while juggling part-time nursing jobs and enduring the emotional toll of working in COVID-19 “red zones.”

Despite overwhelming academic, emotional, and financial pressure, Onazo remained a committed leader, serving in the Student Representative Council and ultimately graduating with distinction. Now a medical doctor, she hopes her story inspires others from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue their dreams, no matter the setbacks.
