34 Undergraduates With Over 4.0 CGPA Benefits From Unical Scholarship Scheme

Cursory: The University of Calabar initiated the “Vice Chancellor Scholarship Award Scheme,” awarding scholarships to 34 outstanding students to position the university as a leading institution. Recipients, chosen from each department, must maintain a GPA of at least 4.00 and receive a 50 percent reduction in tuition fees. The scholarship is valid for the duration of their studies if they maintain the highest CGPA.

During a ceremony held at the university’s Senate Chamber, Professor Florence Obi, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, announced the awarding of scholarships to 34 outstanding students as part of the inaugural “Vice Chancellor Scholarship Award Scheme.”

The initiative stemmed from her investiture speech on December 1, 2020, where she outlined her vision to elevate the university to a leading institution in line with global standards.

Recognizing that academic excellence flourishes in a conducive learning atmosphere, her administration has prioritized infrastructure development and renovation over the past three years to create an optimal learning environment.

“Having taken time to do the first things first by way of providing the enabling environment to enhance academic excellence, I welcome you to witness the award of scholarship by the university management to deserving students.

“The scholarship scheme is instituted and sponsored by the university as the Vice-Chancellor Scholarship and meant for the best students from each of our 110 departments.

“The best students with a Grade Point Aggregate (GPA) of at least 4.00 in the 100 level of every department is a beneficiary of the scheme which attracts the payment of 50 per cent of the charges payable by the student,” she assured.

Obi said the scholarship lasts throughout the duration of the studies of the students provided they maintained the highest CGPA in the department which must not be less than 4.00.She maintained that the implication was that whenever a beneficiary’s CGPA dropped below the 4.00 mark on the scale of 5.00 or the beneficiary failed to come top in his or her department, with a minimum of 4.00 CGPA, he or she stopped enjoying the scholarship.

She explained further that: “When the beneficiary’s CGPA drops, any other student who takes over with a high CGPA automatically becomes the beneficiary, so, the current beneficiaries need to sit-up.”

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the scholarship’s core purpose is to inspire students to achieve academic excellence, recognize their diligent efforts, and alleviate the financial strain on both students and their families amidst prevailing economic challenges.

In response, Miss Rebecca Igboka, a Human Anatomy student in the College of Medical Science, expressed her joy and stated that the scholarship would serve as a strong motivator for her to intensify her efforts.

Similarly, Miss Modesta Onah, from the Radiography department, expressed her gratitude to both the institution and providence for the award, pledging to persevere in maintaining the highest CGPA in her department despite the demands.

Furthermore, Mr. Lucky Emonefe, President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), hailed the initiative as truly inspirational and praiseworthy. He urged other Vice-Chancellors to replicate such initiatives, thereby providing opportunities for more students to benefit.
