After 33 years of setbacks and personal losses, 53-year-old S.O. Samson finally earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ahmadu Bello University and was honored with a N1.1 million cash prize for his perseverance.
A 53-year-old Nigerian man, S.O. Samson, has proven that resilience and determination can turn even the most challenging dreams into reality. After a 33-year-long academic journey filled with obstacles and setbacks, he has finally earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. His perseverance was further rewarded with a N1.1 million cash prize in recognition of his inspiring achievement.
Samson’s journey began in 1992 when he first gained admission to ABU Zaria to study veterinary medicine. However, he faced multiple withdrawals from the program—first in 1992, again in 2002, and later in 2011 at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID). Despite these repeated setbacks, he refused to abandon his dream.
His struggles extended beyond academics. Over the years, he endured the loss of his father in 2000, his mother in 2018, and even a beloved daughter. Through it all, Samson remained determined to complete his studies. In 2013, after years of uncertainty, he made the bold decision to reapply to ABU Zaria. Although many of his former classmates had already become professors, their encouragement gave him the strength to keep going.
On February 15, 2025, Samson was finally inducted into the veterinary profession, marking the end of his decades-long struggle. The ceremony was an emotional moment, as he reflected on the loved ones he had lost along the way. His perseverance touched many hearts, including Dr. Moses Arokoyo, President of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), who honored him with a N1,000,000 cash award. Another dignitary at the event added N100,000, bringing his total prize to N1.1 million.
Overwhelmed by emotions, Samson broke down in tears, expressing gratitude for the journey that had tested him but never broke him. “The journey was long and painful, but it was all worth it,” he said. His story serves as a powerful reminder that perseverance and hard work can lead to success, no matter how long it takes.
