PhD Student Teaching English in China, Aspires to Connect Unemployed Youth With Overseas Jobs

Cursory: Silindokuhle Mlondo, a 26-year-old PhD student, helps unemployed youth in South Africa by offering guidance and support. She teaches English in China and runs Sli M Consulting, aiding individuals seeking teaching jobs abroad. Inspired by her own experiences, Silindokuhle encourages South African graduates to explore opportunities in China, and use their experience, to create employment opportunities upon returning home.

Silindokuhle Mlondo, a dedicated 26-year-old PhD student from Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), is committed to supporting unemployed young individuals in South Africa.

Pursuing her doctorate in Biological Science, with a focus on Parasitology, at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Silindokuhle also works as an English teacher in Wuhan, China.

Since 2022, she has been teaching in China after her contract as an Assistant Agricultural Practitioner at the Department of Agriculture ended prematurely.

In an interview with Briefly News, Silindokuhle shared that she recently established a business to aid young people in their search for teaching opportunities abroad.

“After observing the increasing rate of unemployment in South Africa, I decided to establish a company, called Sli M Consulting, which deals with assisting people [who are] seeking employment abroad with the documentation needed and applications.”

After beginning her career in South Korea, Silindokuhle later secured a teaching position in China. Sharing her experiences online, she noticed a growing interest from her social media followers, prompting numerous inquiries from individuals considering a similar relocation.

In her words:

“I received a lot of inquiries from my social media audience because my journey developed an interest in them to relocate too.

“I aim to provide information and assistance to any graduate in South Africa who feels stuck because of unemployment. Taking inquiries from people takes so much of my time. This is why I have decided to monetise my consultations.”

Silindokuhle provides valuable assistance by guiding individuals through the necessary steps involved in applying for teaching positions abroad, including the required documentation and other relevant information.

Although initially challenging, Silindokuhle found her rhythm and began to derive fulfillment from her work teaching overseas.

“Helping my students develop a better understanding of English is so fulfilling. Nothing excites me more than hearing them construct English sentences with so much confidence. It’s a great feeling,” she said.

The ambitious woman hopes to be a lecturer one day: “Teaching English overseas is a great experience. I am slowly becoming an expert in designing lesson plans and learning material.

“The experience I am getting here will be very useful when I get appointed as a lecturer because that is what I aspire to be in the near future.”

The resilient teacher offers advice to young people in Mzansi:

“I call upon anyone who is unemployed in South Africa to come and join me in China and make a living for themselves while impacting the lives of Asian children.

“People can save enough money, go back home after a few years, and create employment for themselves by founding businesses.”
