Michael Thai is a lecturer at the University of Queensland who is passionate about getting students physically back on campus.
Prof Thai in developmental psychology has attained legend status on campus at the University of Queensland by teaching course material through the medium of rap.
When he’s not pondering the depths of the human mind, he is coming up with psychology-themed song parodies.
Prof Thai stated:
“The first parody I did started off as a way of getting students to come to class, especially for the final lecture.
“I really just wanted them to come in and see the course through to the very end and so I promised them a little rap performance at the end.
“It started off as a bribe, then it became tradition, and then over the years it’s become something the students expect.
“When you’re teaching a course at university, you want the students to identify with the course, for them to feel this course is a part of who they are.
“A small part of university is about knowledge, but a huge part is about connecting with other students at campus.
“Formative years of life and adulthood are spent at university, so it’s a great place to connect with others, to make friends, and to learn together.
Dr Thai’s songs cover everything from the Stanford Prison Experiment to the phenomenon of Social Loafing, where people put in less effort when involved in a group project.
His songs were strictly for the lecture hall until 2020, when COVID-19 forced all classes online.
His first music video achieved instant virality on campus, and now his exuberant end-of-year performances are a staple of his classes.
Dr Thai said the videos were no replacement for in-person education — and fundamentally, he was driven by a desire to get students physically present on campus.
He said the warm, personable atmosphere in the lecture hall was still not quite the same as it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
