She shared that attaining a first-class degree was a challenging journey for her. Itunuoluwa revealed that although she was driven by passion and determination upon entering university, she also encountered periods of motivational struggles along the way.
Itunuoluwa revealed that initially, she lacked motivation to study and attended classes sporadically, yet managed to achieve excellent grades. “I was on cruise control,” she expressed, ” only went to classes when I felt like, never rushed for anything but somehow I had good grades (all A’s and 2 B’s).”
Reflecting on her second year, despite encountering a significant setback, Itunuoluwa shared that she still managed to uphold a first-class grade. She became more committed in her third year, determined to excel both academically and in her extracurricular pursuits.
Juggling coursework alongside extracurricular activities posed challenges for Itunuoluwa. However, with the guidance of her mentors and the support of her peers, she was able to navigate through. Despite maintaining a high grade point average, she acknowledged not achieving her desired outcome.

Recalling her project placement in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology, Itunuoluwa expressed initial excitement due to her interest in the course. However, she encountered challenges with her chosen topic, “Film-forming properties of Sorghum bicolor starch and HydroxyPropylMethylCellulose,” including inadequate lighting and the absence of designated project work time slots in the timetable.
She described having to utilize every available moment of light to progress with her work, even skipping classes to do so. Despite the obstacles, Itunuoluwa persevered, dedicating her best efforts to the research and expanding her knowledge and skills.
In her exact words:
Yesterday, as I heard my name echoed over the speakers, I looked up to find myself being called to receive the award for the best project student in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology. Wow…
I must admit, I wasn’t expecting it, despite pouring my heart and soul into my work. You know that feeling when your hard work pays off, but it still feels surreal? That was exactly how I felt in that moment.
If I were to tell you that achieving this feat was easy, I’d be robbing you of the opportunity to witness the journey. When I was assigned the project placement in the PCT department, I was thrilled. It was a course I found intriguing and, dare I say, easy – until I dove into my bench work on “film forming properties of Sorghum bicolor starch and HydroxyPropylMethylCellulose.”
The challenges began to surface – from the lack of adequate lighting in the institution to the absence of designated project work time slots in the timetable. I found myself skipping classes to seize every available moment of light to progress with my work.
Yet, through the obstacles and setbacks, I persevered. I poured countless hours into my research trying to fit each piece of the jugsaw puzzle rightly, pushing the boundaries of my knowledge and skills. And yesterday, as I stood on that stage, receiving recognition for my efforts, I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey that brought me here.
Itunuoluwa attributed her success not only to her hard work but also to the guidance and unwavering support of her supervisor. She expressed gratitude for the honor and excitement for future opportunities.
