70-year-old Nigerian Man Who Doesn’t Have Formal Education, Bags University’s Highest Degree for His 78 Inventions

Engr Hadi Usman, a 70-year-old innovator renowned for his ingenious creations in academia, such as a fuelless generator, a water-operated stove, and a Vespa engine helicopter, has been awarded an honorary doctorate in Science by Gombe State University.

This recognition has garnered widespread praise among Nigerians on social media platforms.

As reported by Safianu Danladi Maringa, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor of Gombe State, Usman was conferred with the honorary degree during the recent 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th combined convocation of Gombe State University.

Despite lacking formal Western education, Usman, who also serves as a lecturer at the university, has made remarkable contributions to academia, having invented a radio station, a radio transmitter, and a handset.

Originating from Jekadafari Ward in Gombe local government area, Usman revealed in a recent interview that he has been engaged in inventing for over five decades.

Despite receiving an education in Qur’anic Studies and completing further studies in a Borno village at the age of 12, Usman embarked on his inventive journey in 1971, accumulating a total of 78 inventions.

According to him, his research on developing a stove powered by water for heat energy took three years to complete, highlighting his dedication and perseverance in advancing innovative solutions.

He said:

“I received education, but not Western education. I received an education in Qur’anic Studies. Afterward, I was sent to a village in Borno for further studies, completed the programme and graduated when I was 12 years old, and thereafter came back home and performed the ceremony.

“I have been inventing things since 1971, and I have 78 inventions. However, none of my inventions took so much time for research like the construction of the stove that uses water to produce heat energy. I spent three years on that research and I wondered why there was no lightning and thunder in the dry season.”

It is worth mentioning that Nigeria has witnessed a surge in talented inventors like Usman, contributing gadgets aimed at assisting people, exemplified by individuals such as Yusuf Shamsudeen, a 30-year-old Chemistry graduate.
