The Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Dr. Taiwo Lasisi, has revealed that thousands of certificates belonging to past graduates remain uncollected, prompting the institution to consider imposing fines on those who fail to retrieve them.
Speaking at a pre-graduation press conference on Thursday at the institution’s CIBN Hall, Lasisi emphasized that all certificates for the 2023/2024 graduands have been signed and will be available for collection immediately after the convocation.

“It may interest you to know that the certificates of all the graduands have been signed and are ready for collection immediately after the graduation,” he stated. “I also want to disclose that thousands of certificates of previous graduates are awaiting collection. The institution may have to introduce fines for those who have not come to collect their certificates.”
The convocation ceremony, scheduled for Friday, February 14, 2025, at the 1,000-seater hall along the North/South Road, will have Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as the Special Guest of Honour. Unlike previous editions that combined multiple graduation years, this year’s ceremony will be exclusively for the 2023/2024 graduands, as the institution currently has no backlog.
Lasisi also highlighted improvements in academic discipline, revealing that some students admitted alongside the graduating class had been dismissed due to academic incompetence or misconduct following disciplinary proceedings.
To ensure a secure and orderly convocation, he confirmed the presence of internal and external security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Reaffirming the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, he said, “The Polytechnic, Ibadan, will continue to be one of the foremost and leading institutions across the country.”
Lasisi further appreciated Governor Makinde for prioritizing education and supporting the accreditation, re-accreditation, and introduction of new programs at the institution, pledging the polytechnic’s continued cooperation with the state government.
The press briefing was attended by key officials, including Deputy Rector Mrs. Olaide Salawu, Registrar Mr. Joseph Ogunjimi, ASUU Chairman Dr. Kola Lawal, Medical Director Dr. Ogunsina, and other senior staff members.
