Growing up, he supported his family by hawking mangoes and local drinks, an experience that shaped his strong work ethic and unwavering determination to succeed academically.
In 2016, Onyeka graduated with a First-Class degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Despite his academic achievements, his quest for further studies abroad proved difficult, as he faced numerous rejections over a three-year period. Many of these setbacks came from lower-tier institutions, yet Onyeka remained persistent and continued applying to top universities, motivated by his dream of pursuing research.
Onyeka’s dedication finally paid off when he received offers from prestigious universities, including the University of California, San Diego, Rice University, Purdue University, and the University of Kansas, among others. Ultimately, he chose to pursue his PhD in Biological Sciences with a focus on Virology at UC San Diego, a globally respected institution known for its research contributions.
Reflecting on his journey, Onyeka emphasizes the emotional rollercoaster of his experiences, which included tears, hope, and moments of joy.
