Jay L. Cunningham has made history at the University of Washington, becoming the first African American to earn a PhD in Human-Centered Design and Engineering.

Jay’s academic journey began at the University of Alabama, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. With a passion for exploring the intersection of technology and human interaction, he pursued a Master of Science in Human-Centered Design and Engineering, specializing in Human-Computer Research, at the University of Washington.

Determined to push the boundaries of innovation and inclusivity, Jay pursued a doctoral degree—an endeavor that would ultimately make history.

Reflecting on his achievement in a LinkedIn post, Jay described the milestone as deeply personal, emphasizing its importance as an inspiration for future scholars. His journey was further distinguished by his service as a University of Washington Regent during his doctoral studies.

Grateful for the support of his family, friends, colleagues, mentors, and broader community, Jay acknowledged the collective encouragement that carried him through his decade-long academic journey.

Originally from a small town in rural Mississippi, Jay began his higher education at East Mississippi Community College before advancing to earn multiple degrees in Computer and Information Science. His dissertation, titled “Methods of Designing Justice-Oriented Interactive AI Systems,” underscores his dedication to developing ethical and inclusive technology.

Looking ahead, Jay aims to continue his research in responsible human-centered Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), striving to create more equitable and just technological systems.
