The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu has said the Scheme is collaborating with relevant agencies like WAEC, JAMB and NIMC, to upgrade and further fortify its verification process for the registration of Prospective Corps Members for National Service service.
The Director General stated this while addressing the investigative committee on certificate racketeering organised by the House of Representatives joint Committees on Universities, Polytechnics, Interior, Foreign Affairs and Youth Development, under the Chairmanship of Honourable Abubakar Fulata.
Nafiu disclosed that NYSC had entered into partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), thus upgrading its credentials’ verification process to include syncing certificates submitted by Prospective Corps Members for verification with their National Identification Number (NIN).
He said this had strengthened the process. Nafiu added that even more stringent reforms had been initiated to ensure that such an incident as the infiltration of the Corps by an investigative journalist, Umar Audu in 2024 would not re-occur. Umar had obtained a fake degree from a so-called university in Benin Republic without actually attending the school and allegedly bribed officials of the Federal Ministry of Education to get clearance to enable him enrol for NYSC.
The Director General however decried the lack of modern biometrics equipment to enable the Scheme step up its biometrics verification process. He called for more funding to enable the acquisition of more sophisticated biometrics equipment and other needs of the NYSC.
Umar Audu, who also spoke at the hearing, disclosed that registering on the NYSC portal, however, proved to be a challenge that he overcame only by manipulating the system with a change of email and phone number.
Also speaking before the committee, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, who was represented by the Director, Education Support Services, Mrs Larai Ahmed said the department that issued clearance to Audu had since been overhauled, with stronger measures put in place
