Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, has declared two days of mourning and suspended lectures to honor a student killed in a robbery, while assuring the public of restored calm and enhanced campus security.
The management of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, has suspended academic activities for two days—Tuesday, June 24, and Wednesday, June 25, 2025—in honor of a student who tragically lost their life in a recent robbery attack.
This decision was announced in a press release by the university’s Deputy Registrar (Information), Alhaji Baba Akote, who described the days as a period of mourning. He emphasized the importance of reflection and prayer for the deceased, encouraging both staff and students to observe the moment with respect.
Alhaji Akote also reassured the public that normalcy has been fully restored across both the Lapai town and the university’s main and Kobo campuses. He attributed this to swift intervention following an emergency security meeting held by the university management.
The high-level meeting was attended by key stakeholders including:
- Hon. Hamidu Muazu Jantabo, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs
- Hon. Abdullahi Adamu Mammagi, Commissioner for Tertiary Education
- Representatives of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), the Alumni Association, traditional leaders, and security agencies
In response to widespread concern and misinformation, the university strongly refuted rumors of retaliatory attacks by youths from the host community, labeling such reports as false and misleading.
“The situation in Lapai is calm,” the statement noted, urging students to continue their academic and personal routines without fear or disruption.
To reinforce campus safety, the university has initiated regular security patrols around student hostels and key access points. Students have been advised to stay law-abiding, refrain from spreading unverified information, and collaborate fully with security officials.
The university also expressed its appreciation for the support of the Niger State Government, local security agencies, traditional rulers, and community leaders in ensuring a peaceful and secure learning environment.
