Bayero University Kano has begun investigating students accused of allegedly deceiving US-based professor Farooq Kperogi through an online impersonation scam.

Bayero University Kano (BUK) has launched an investigation into reports that some of its students allegedly defrauded a US-based Nigerian journalism professor, Farooq Kperogi.
The issue became public after Kperogi shared details on his verified Facebook page, explaining how a student identified as Ismail Sani reportedly posed online as a woman named Halima Tahir and repeatedly collected money from him before the deception was uncovered.
The story quickly gained attention on social media, sparking debates about students’ conduct online and the importance of accountability in higher institutions.
In response, the university’s Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, said the institution treats any action that could damage its reputation very seriously. He confirmed that a preliminary investigation has already begun to determine what truly happened.
Garba explained that the university authorities are reviewing the matter according to the school’s disciplinary procedures and regulations. He also emphasized that the alleged actions of a few individuals should not be seen as representing the values or character of the university.
The institution urged the public to remain patient and allow the investigation to run its course while avoiding the spread of unverified information online.
The university also acknowledged the support provided by individuals like Kperogi who assist students financially, noting that such contributions help many students cover registration fees and other academic expenses.
BUK assured that if the allegations are proven to be true, appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in line with university rules and applicable laws. The institution reiterated its commitment to maintaining high standards of discipline while ensuring fairness and due process throughout the investigation.
