Ebonyi First Lady Pledges N500,000 Monthly Support for Visually Impaired Students

Ebonyi First Lady, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, pledged N500,000 monthly and a one-time donation of one million naira to support visually impaired students, reaffirming her commitment to social welfare and inclusivity for vulnerable communities.

Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, the First Lady of Ebonyi State, has pledged a monthly donation of N500,000 to support visually impaired students at the State Special School, Opefia, Izzi LGA. The announcement was made on October 13, 2024, during the celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child, themed “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” in Abakaliki.

In addition to the monthly support, Mrs. Nwifuru, who heads the Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Persons Foundation (BERWO), announced a one-time donation of one million naira to address the students’ feeding needs. “This initiative aligns with BERWO’s mission to uplift internally displaced persons, the underprivileged, and other vulnerable groups in rural communities,” she said.

The First Lady highlighted the social exclusion faced by visually impaired individuals and urged society to show compassion toward them. She also pledged BERWO’s commitment to protecting these students by providing emergency contact numbers for reporting sexual and gender-based violence incidents.

Mrs. Nwifuru reaffirmed the foundation’s focus on creating inclusive environments where vulnerable groups can access equal opportunities and benefit from state development programs.

During the event, Mrs. Nwifuru also visited several institutions, including the Nigeria Correction Service’s Abakaliki Custodian Centre, Mile Four Hospital, Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre, Remand Home, and Effata Orthopaedics Clinic. These visits emphasized the government’s commitment to its “People’s Charter of Needs” initiative.

The First Lady distributed supplies such as educational materials, exercise books, bags of rice and garri, bath soap, and other essentials to internally displaced persons and hospital patients. These actions reflect the state government’s dedication to social welfare and inclusivity, with a focus on citizens with special needs and vulnerable communities.
