From Dhaka to Europe: How Nadim Ahmed Earned the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship to Study Smart Cities in Spain, Belgium, and Finland

Nadim Ahmed, a civil engineering graduate from Dhaka, Bangladesh, overcame pandemic-related setbacks and multiple rejections to earn a fully funded Erasmus Mundus scholarship in 2024, enabling him to pursue a master’s degree in Smart Cities across Spain, Belgium, and Finland, where he now studies sustainable urban development while inspiring others with his persistence and vision.

Nadim Ahmed’s journey from the vibrant streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh, to lecture halls across Europe is one marked by resilience, strategic planning, and unwavering determination. A graduate in Civil Engineering from the University of Dhaka, Nadim was never just content with academic excellence—his true passion lay in contributing to a sustainable urban future, especially in the face of climate challenges affecting modern cities.

From the beginning, he set his sights high. Inspired by the success stories of previous Erasmus Mundus scholars from his home country, Nadim began building a competitive profile: he engaged in research projects, attended academic seminars, and worked on community and environmental initiatives. But despite all his preparations, the path forward was anything but smooth.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused an unexpected delay in his graduation, pushing his plans off course. In the aftermath, Nadim faced multiple rejections, including from the Erasmus Mundus program itself. At one point, he received a prestigious, fully funded Ph.D. offer from UNIST in South Korea and even partial funding from various European universities, including Sapienza University of Rome and two Erasmus+ programs. Yet, he chose not to settle—he was determined to pursue the opportunity that truly resonated with his goals.

His patience and persistence finally paid off in 2024 when he received a fully funded offer from the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree program in Smart Cities and Communities (SMACCs). It was the perfect fit, combining disciplines like engineering, urban planning, and data science with sustainability and innovation at its core.

As part of the SMACCs program, Nadim is now studying across three countries: starting at the University of the Basque Country in Spain, continuing to the University of Mons in Belgium, and soon heading to the University of Vaasa in Finland. Each location offers a unique perspective on urban infrastructure and smart technology, giving him a well-rounded, multicultural education.

Financially, the journey is fully supported by the Erasmus Mundus scholarship, which covers tuition, living expenses, insurance, and travel costs—making it possible for Nadim to focus entirely on learning and growth. Even language barriers, especially in Spain, didn’t stop him; he enrolled in local language classes to better integrate into the culture.

Beyond academics, the experience has been transformative. Nadim is collaborating with peers from all over the world, tackling real-world sustainability problems, and preparing to bring innovative solutions back to developing nations like Bangladesh.

To students aspiring for global education, Nadim offers heartfelt advice: be patient, be persistent, and always stay true to your goals. Success may not come immediately, but with resilience and the right mindset, the dream of studying at world-class universities and creating meaningful change is absolutely within reach.

His story is not just about academic achievement—it’s about believing in yourself when the odds seem stacked against you, about knowing when to say no, and waiting for the right opportunity. Today, Nadim Ahmed is living his dream. Tomorrow, he hopes to build smarter, greener cities for all.
