Gift Mlangali’s inspiring journey shows how a Malawian man rose from poverty and working as a security guard to earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences with Second Class Upper Honours through determination, persistence, and self-belief.
Gift Mlangali, a determined African man from Malawi, has achieved the unthinkable – earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences with Second Class Upper Honours from Mzuzu University, Malawi. His inspiring story is a testament to the power of persistence, patience, and self-belief.
Gift’s journey was marked by poverty and hardship from the start. Born in Mbekeyani Village, Ntcheu District, he grew up in a poor farming family where survival came before education. Financial constraints forced him to drop out of school at Standard 7, but he never gave up on his dreams.
With the help of a relative, Gift reenrolled in school and completed Standard 7. He later gained admission to Secondary School, but financial struggles persisted. To make ends meet, he worked as a security guard, shopkeeper, and took on odd jobs.
Gift’s turning point came when he secured a job as a cook at the Malawi College of Health Sciences. Watching students train in health-related courses reignited his passion for learning. He rewrote his MSCE through self-study, passed with strong credits, and reapplied for admission.
In 2011, Gift was admitted to study a Certificate in Biomedical Sciences. He graduated in 2014 and was employed as a Laboratory Assistant under Malawi’s Ministry of Health. He continued to push himself, upgrading to a Diploma in 2022 and eventually enrolling in a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences at Mzuzu University in January 2024.
Gift’s perseverance paid off when he graduated with a Second Class Upper Honours degree in 2025. He expressed pride in himself and gratitude to those who supported him, saying, “I am proud of myself and grateful to everyone who supported me along the way”.
