From Waiter to First-Class Graduate: The Inspiring Journey of Obed Asamoah Boateng

Obed Asamoah Boateng, a determined Ghanaian student, overcame financial struggles by working multiple jobs, including as a waiter, to fund his education and graduated with a first-class degree in philosophy and political science from the University of Ghana.

A young Ghanaian man, Obed Asamoah Boateng, has defied all odds to graduate with a first-class degree in philosophy and political science from the University of Ghana, proving that determination and resilience can overcome even the toughest challenges.

Obed’s academic journey was anything but smooth. Despite excelling in his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) with 5As, 2Bs, and a C, financial difficulties almost crushed his dream of furthering his education.

After high school, he worked as a mobile money agent to save money but struggled to make ends meet. Encouraged by a friend, he moved to Accra in search of better opportunities. He secured a job at a biscuit manufacturing company, working long hours and night shifts, yet he never lost sight of his goal—attending university.

In 2020, Obed purchased the University of Ghana admission forms and was accepted the following year. However, financial struggles persisted. Though his parents offered some initial support, it was insufficient. Determined to fund his education, he took on various jobs, including selling tissue paper, assisting at his father’s mechanic shop, and working as a waiter at a restaurant in East Legon.

“Life was tough, but I had to plan my next move. Giving up wasn’t an option,” he recalled.

Balancing academics with multiple jobs was exhausting, but Obed remained focused. To earn extra income, he also worked as an usher at events and a server at receptions. However, by his third year, he realized that juggling too many jobs was affecting his grades. To prioritize his studies, he quit waitressing and started selling bread in his hostel, hawking them before lectures.

Despite his financial struggles, Obed was actively involved in extracurricular activities and student politics, serving as the vice president of his department. His relentless determination and hard work ultimately paid off—he graduated with a first-class degree.

Reflecting on his journey, Obed described his achievement as a testament to resilience, perseverance, and faith.

“There were days I felt like giving up, nights I cried, and moments I doubted myself. But every struggle, every sacrifice, and every step was worth it,” he said.

To those facing challenges, he offers encouragement:

“Your dreams are valid. Your efforts will pay off. The struggles won’t last forever, but the victory will. Stay focused, stay resilient, and trust the process.”

As he moves forward, Obed is committed to continuous learning, growth, and making a lasting impact. His story stands as an inspiration to countless others striving for success against all odds.
