FUNAAB Scholar Wins Three Prestigious International PhD Scholarships

Mr. Hameed Ologunde, a Lecturer II in the Department of Soil Science and Land Management (SSLM) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has achieved an extraordinary feat by securing three highly competitive Doctoral scholarships.

The scholarships were awarded by the University of Queensland in Australia, the University of Florida in the United States, and the University of Bayreuth in Germany (DAAD).

Faced with the enviable task of selecting among these world-class institutions, Mr. Ologunde ultimately chose the University of Florida, where he is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences. His fully-funded scholarship runs from 2024 to 2028. His research is centred on Soil Health Management for Climate Resilience and Sustainable Food Production, with a focus on tropical regions, an area critical to ensuring food security and combating the adverse effects of climate change.

Before embarking on the new academic journey, Mr. Ologunde laid a solid foundation at FUNAAB, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Agriculture from the SSLM Department. His Master’s programme was supported by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) under the African Cassava Agronomy Initiative (ACAI) project.

In addition to his achievements at FUNAAB, he further broadened his academic portfolio by obtaining a second Master’s Degree in Soil and Plant Nutrition from the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), Brazil, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund/Agricultural Research and Innovation Fellowship for Africa (TETFund/ARIFA). During this period, his research delved into Soil Physics, Soil Conservation, and the Application of Machine-Learning Techniques in Soil Management.

Mr. Ologunde’s remarkable academic journey reflected his commitment to advancing global food security and agricultural sustainability. His success is a testament to his dedication, hard work, and the solid support system at FUNAAB. He attributed his achievements to the guidance and mentorship of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Prof. Felix Kolawole Salako, and the Director of the Directorate of Research, Innovations, and Partnerships (DRIP), Prof. Mutiu Busari, both from the SSLM Department, played pivotal roles in shaping his academic career.

Mr. Ologunde has expressed deep gratitude to the two academic luminaries, acknowledging their influence in his development. He also dedicated his accomplishments to his family for their unwavering support, stating that their encouragement was instrumental in his success.
