Governor Abiodun Rewards OOU’s Best Graduating Student with N3 Million, Others Get N500,000 Each

Governor Dapo Abiodun awarded N3 million to OOU’s best graduating student, N500,000 each to 14 other top students, and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to advancing education through infrastructural development, digital resources, and strategic funding initiatives.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has awarded N3 million to Miss Dauda Aishat Anuoluwapo, the overall best graduating student of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) for the 2023/2024 academic session. Additionally, 14 other outstanding students from various faculties received N500,000 each in recognition of their academic excellence.

Governor Abiodun emphasized his vision to position Ogun State not just as Nigeria’s education capital but also as a hub for academic excellence and innovation. He made this known during the university’s 34th convocation ceremony, which featured the conferment of honorary degrees, the awarding of higher degrees and diplomas, and the presentation of prizes.

Represented by his Deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the Governor highlighted his administration’s dedication to enhancing education through various capacity-building initiatives and policies aimed at ensuring access to quality learning. He noted that OOU plays a critical role in national development, particularly in capacity building and research, and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to providing the university with advanced technological resources to support research, teaching, and learning.

“Let me assure you that our government remains fully committed to OOU’s continued development. This includes constructing modern lecture halls, state-of-the-art laboratories, student accommodation, and recreational facilities. We are also expanding e-learning infrastructure and digital resources to equip students with the necessary tools to compete in an increasingly globalized world,” Abiodun stated.

The Governor also acknowledged the impact of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), initiated under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, in supporting students across tertiary institutions. He praised the contributions of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) in repositioning Ogun’s tertiary institutions through various interventions.

He further highlighted the establishment of the Ogun State Education Trust Fund in 2020, designed to support infrastructural development in state-owned tertiary institutions not covered by TETFUND. Plans are now underway to extend this initiative to primary and secondary schools, reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality education at all levels.

Governor Abiodun called on individuals, corporate organizations, and the private sector to collaborate with the government in advancing education in Ogun State, stressing that educational development is a collective responsibility.

During the event, he also congratulated Dr. Adekunle Hassan on receiving an honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) degree. He commended Dr. Hassan for his generous N500 million endowment for a Professorial Chair in Ophthalmology and an additional N500 million donation to the School of Eye Health.

Addressing the graduates, the Governor encouraged them to uphold the values instilled in them by the university, urging them to become innovators, problem solvers, and leaders in their respective fields.

In their remarks, OOU’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Toyin Ashiru, and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, expressed gratitude to Governor Abiodun for his presence at the convocation. They acknowledged his administration’s unwavering commitment to education, highlighting key achievements such as the expansion of academic programs, infrastructural development, and national recognition in technology.
