Obafemi Awolowo University Criticized for Denying Use of ‘Oduduwa Hall’ for Yoruba National Unity Day

The Yoruba National Youths criticized Obafemi Awolowo University for canceling the use of Oduduwa Hall for the Yoruba National Unity Day, accusing the administration of undermining Yoruba cultural progress and reinforcing their push for independence from Nigeria.

The Yoruba National Youths have expressed disapproval of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) for canceling the use of its Oduduwa Hall for the upcoming Yoruba National Unity Day event. The event, meant to honor the historic Kiriji War, was canceled just 24 hours before it was to take place, leaving the youth shocked.

In a statement from Yoruba National Youth Leader in Diaspora, Prophet Ayodele Ologunloluwa, and Comrade Oyegunle Oluwamayowa Omotoyole, the Vice Chancellor’s decision was criticized as unnecessary and reflective of a broader disregard for Yoruba cultural advancement. They were particularly disappointed that the university failed to support an event commemorating a key historical moment for the Yoruba people.

The youth leaders emphasized that the hall, funded by the former Western Government, should support cultural events rather than being denied for such purposes. They called the Vice Chancellor’s actions unjustified, accusing the university administration of being opposed to Yoruba unity and progress.

The youths also claimed the university’s decision undermines the ambitions of Yoruba youth, aligning with what they see as enemies of Yoruba progress. They vowed to protect their cultural heritage and prevent similar cancellations in the future.

The statement accused OAU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simon Bamire, and his team of trying to sabotage the Yoruba National Unity Day celebration, suggesting the Nigerian government influenced the university’s actions. According to the statement, this incident reinforced the Yoruba people’s determination to separate from Nigeria, asserting that political interests are being prioritized over the well-being of the Yoruba people.

Despite the setback, the Yoruba National Unity Day was later held at an event hall in Ile Ife, attracting large crowds from across the South West, Edo, Kwara, Kogi, and Delta States. During the event, Emeritus Professor Banji Akintoye, leader of the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement (YSDM), reaffirmed the Yoruba people’s commitment to gaining autonomy, emphasizing that they desire an independent nation free from Nigeria. He praised the organizers of the unity events held in both Ibadan and Ile Ife, recognizing the uniqueness of Yoruba culture and values.
