In a tragic incident, a 23-year-old university student named Maxwell drowned under mysterious circumstances in the Amekpa area of Ughelli, leading to deep mourning among his family and friends.
Maxwell’s lifeless body was discovered floating in the muddy waters of the sand-dredging area in Amekpa on Tuesday. According to an anonymous neighbor of the deceased, Maxwell and his friends were crossing the dredging site in a small canoe when the incident occurred.
The neighbor recounted: “On Sunday there was confusion in our area as news filtered in that Maxwell drowns in a capsized canoe as they attempted to cross the dredging area.
“The friends came to tell the parents. Efforts were made to find the corpse. Yesterday morning (Tuesday) the corpse floated. There was confusion, as sacrifices were ordered to be made before he can be buried near the site.”
She further expressed the sorrow inflicted upon Maxwell’s parents, mentioning that he had returned home despite having exams at the University of PortHarcourt.
She also noted his association with a group of friends known for being irresponsible, but the motive behind their presence in the dirty waters remains unknown.
In her words: “This boy is supposed to be writing his exam in Uniport, but he came back some time now. He’s always moving with those Trouser-sagging boys with dreadlocks.
“He has caused severe pain to his parents, I was with the mother, and the father has remained inconsolable. What he and friends were finding in the dirty waters still remains unknown.”
