UNIABUJA Appoints Professor Aisha Maikudi as Vice-Chancellor Amid Controversy

Professor Aisha Maikudi has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, sparking controversy over her experience despite being recognized for her academic achievements and leadership potential.

The University of Abuja has named Professor Aisha Maikudi as its new Vice-Chancellor, a decision announced by the acting Director of Public Affairs, Habib Yakoob, on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.

Maikudi’s appointment, set to commence on January 1, 2025, has sparked criticism and protests from stakeholders, with some members of the university’s governing council boycotting the meetings leading up to her selection. Critics argue that Maikudi lacks the necessary experience for the role, further fueling the controversy surrounding her appointment.

Despite the discord, the governing council approved Maikudi’s appointment during its 77th Extraordinary Meeting, highlighting her emergence as the top candidate among 10 shortlisted contenders.

Born on January 31, 1983, Professor Aisha Maikudi is a distinguished academic with a law degree from the University of Reading and a Ph.D. in International Law from the University of Abuja. She began her career at UNIABUJA in 2008 as a lecturer, steadily advancing to become a professor in 2022.

As a professor of international law, Maikudi has made notable contributions to academia through numerous publications and active participation in national and international conferences. Her appointment is viewed by some as recognition of her academic achievements and leadership potential.

While her five-year tenure begins amid ongoing controversy, supporters of her appointment express optimism about her ability to steer the university toward academic excellence.
