Hamad Nofisat, a first-class Accounting graduate from UNILAG, achieved academic excellence through determination, resilience, and effective time management, overcoming challenges like setbacks in grades while staying focused on her goal.

Success is often seen as a journey, shaped by the choices and challenges one faces along the way. Hamad Nofisat, a determined young scholar, embraced this philosophy and emerged as a first-class graduate from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Nofisat was one of 106 students who achieved first-class honors in the university’s 2023/2024 academic session. Her outstanding academic performance not only earned her a place among UNILAG’s top graduates but also redefined expectations at the institution. In an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, Nofisat shared her journey, the obstacles she encountered, and the strategies she used to succeed against the odds.
Despite coming from a modest background, Nofisat was determined to excel. At UNILAG’s 55th convocation ceremony, she graduated with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.68 in Accounting, a feat that required dedication and resilience.
Reflecting on her motivation, she revealed that her interest in Accounting began in secondary school at Tomia Community Senior Secondary School, Alagbado. Encouraged by her teachers and inspired by the prestige of being a chartered accountant, she set her sights on academic excellence.
“I told myself, ‘No other class, other than first-class, was an option.’ That kept me going,” she said.
Like many students, Nofisat encountered significant challenges. One of the toughest moments came in her third year when she received an E in a 3-unit course—an unexpected setback for someone who had never earned anything below a C.
Instead of letting it discourage her, she took a break to process her emotions and analyze what went wrong. After identifying the problem, she refocused on her goals and worked even harder to ensure it didn’t happen again.
Beyond academics, Nofisat understood the importance of time management. She emphasized the need to set priorities and recognize the urgency of different tasks.
“I learned to differentiate between what is required now and what can wait. Understanding the end goal of both academic and extracurricular activities helped me plan better,” she explained.
Nofisat’s story is a testament to the power of determination, focus, and resilience. For students aspiring to achieve academic excellence, she advises:
• Stay focused on your goal.
• Learn from setbacks instead of letting them define you.
• Prioritize your time effectively.
Her journey proves that with the right mindset and discipline, success is achievable—even in the face of challenges.
