UNIZIK Student Dies After Reportedly Jumping from Three-Storey Building

A UNIZIK student died after jumping from a 3-story building, allegedly after consuming hard drugs, with the incident sparking an investigation and shock within the student community.

A male student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State, lost his life after allegedly consuming hard drugs and jumping from a three-story building at a lodge near Royal Kitchen Junction, Ifite-Awka. This tragic incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud thud, prompting a rush to the scene, where the young man was found lying in a pool of blood, critically injured. Despite efforts to save him, the student was confirmed dead at a nearby hospital. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Details of the Incident:

• Cause of Death: Alleged consumption of hard drugs, suspected to be “mkpurummiri”, before jumping from the building.
• Roommate’s Condition: The student’s roommate was found in an incoherent state, allegedly under the influence of the same substances, and is currently in police custody.

UNIZIK’s Chief Safety Officer, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed the incident, stating that the university is still investigating to determine what happened and how it happened. He noted that the incident occurred in a private lodge outside the school, and the university doesn’t have control over who is admitted to such lodges.³ ⁴
