A severe windstorm damaged hostels, trees, and other facilities at UNN’s Nsukka campus, prompting emergency response and recovery efforts, while the university confirmed that no lives were lost.

A powerful windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall caused significant destruction at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), on Friday afternoon. The storm affected several parts of the campus, damaging buildings, uprooting trees, and disrupting movement within the university.
Among the areas most affected were Awolowo and Isa Kaita hostels, where sections of the roofing were torn off by the strong winds. The damage exposed some student accommodation blocks to harsh weather conditions and disrupted normal hostel activities.
According to university authorities, numerous trees were uprooted during the storm, while large branches fell onto roads and pathways across the campus. This temporarily blocked access routes and created safety concerns for students, staff, and visitors.
Despite the extensive damage, the university confirmed that no casualties were recorded. Management stated that efforts are underway to fully assess the extent of the destruction and determine the resources needed for repairs.
In response to the incident, emergency teams were immediately deployed to clear fallen trees, remove debris, and secure affected locations. Several departments, including the Works Services Department, Security Unit, Directorate of Housing and Accommodation, Student Affairs Department, and the Environmental Taskforce, were mobilized to restore order and ensure public safety.
The university has also begun a detailed assessment of damaged infrastructure to identify areas requiring urgent repairs. Officials noted that restoration work would commence as quickly as possible to return affected facilities to normal use.
To reduce the impact on students whose hostels were damaged, management disclosed that temporary arrangements are being made to provide alternative accommodation and minimize disruption to academic and residential activities.
Vice-Chancellor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya expressed sympathy to students and staff affected by the disaster. He assured members of the university community that management remains committed to their welfare, safety, and security.
The Vice-Chancellor further directed all relevant departments to accelerate recovery efforts and ensure that normal campus activities resume promptly. He also praised students and staff for remaining calm during the emergency and encouraged continued cooperation with officials overseeing the recovery process.
University authorities stated that additional updates will be provided as assessments continue and rehabilitation efforts progress across the campus.
