Bayero University Kano (BUK) won the top prize at the 2024 Aspire Coronation Trust (ACT) Foundation Leadership Challenge for developing an innovative portable inverter system, outshining over 20 universities in the competition.
Bayero University Kano (BUK) has secured the top prize at the 2024 Aspire Coronation Trust (ACT) Foundation Leadership Challenge, a significant milestone for the institution.
This achievement was announced during the 2024 Enactus National Competition, held on July 23 in Lagos, where BUK’s team competed against over 20 other universities from across Nigeria.
The winning project, a portable inverter system capable of generating up to 1,000 watts, was developed by five BUK students—Ahmad Abdullahi, Rafiat Olajide, Nimatullah Hassan, Idris Haruna, and Aminat Adebisi—under the guidance of Professor Shamsudddeen Umar and Dr. Zainab Nuhu.
The innovative inverter, which utilizes lithium batteries connected in series and parallel, can power essential appliances such as light bulbs, fans, and small electronics. The project was praised by the judges for its ingenuity and practical application, earning it the top spot in the competition.
Yusuf Musa, the team leader and a 400-level Law student, expressed his gratitude, highlighting the team’s dedication to diligence, teamwork, and resilience. He emphasized that the diverse academic and social backgrounds of the team members played a crucial role in their success and prepared them for real-world challenges.
Since its inception in 2016, the ACT Foundation Leadership Challenge, in partnership with Enactus Nigeria, has encouraged submissions from various Enactus teams across the country. This year, the top 10 projects received seed grants and were showcased at the Enactus National Competition, where BUK’s project emerged as the best.
