Korede Elijah Adewunmi, the Best Graduating Student in Philosophy from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Class of 2023, achieved an exceptional CGPA of 4.94. In an interview with Korede Badmus, Adewunmi reflected on his academic journey, challenges, and aspirations, offering insights into his path to success.
Adewunmi graduated with a CGPA of 4.94, emerging as the best in his department. His academic interests include ethics—specifically bioethics, environmental ethics, the ethics of emerging science and technology, and the philosophy of mind. He is particularly passionate about using philosophical ideas to address contemporary challenges.
Initially, Adewunmi intended to study Law at OAU. However, the program’s disaccreditation in 2018 forced him to reconsider. Conversations with senior members of the National Association of Philosophy Students sparked his interest in Philosophy, and the reputation of OAU’s Philosophy Department further influenced his decision.
Adewunmi’s academic journey was not without challenges. He faced financial difficulties and recurring ill-health, which once forced him to take up manual labor at a construction site. The physically demanding job affected his health, but with support from his parents and a close friend, Sherif Lawal, he overcame these obstacles. He credited a mindset shift—accepting his challenges and seeking solutions—as a key turning point in his journey.
To balance academics with personal life, Adewunmi treated his academic responsibilities as an integral part of his personal life. He prioritized completing 70% of his academic tasks before addressing other commitments. When overwhelmed, he relied on friends for motivation, which helped him stay focused and energized.
Adewunmi’s final-year project, “The Problem of Other Minds and Cybercrimes,” was his proudest academic achievement. Despite limited resources and initial doubts, he dedicated countless hours to research, earning a top score of 77% among over 90 submissions. He regarded this accomplishment as a testament to his perseverance and determination.
During intense periods, Adewunmi managed stress by prioritizing rest. He listened to his body, ensuring he took breaks when fatigued. This approach helped him maintain focus and productivity throughout his academic journey.
Mentors and peers played a significant role in his success. Adewunmi credited mentors like Dr. Babalola Balogun for boosting his confidence and providing guidance. Senior colleagues, including Mr. Afolabi Kehinde and Mr. Adebola Balogun, also offered valuable support, while his friend Sherif Lawal provided consistent encouragement and assistance.
As General Secretary of the National Association of Philosophy Students, Adewunmi worked on several initiatives, including a successful program on drug abuse awareness. The event highlighted his ability to collaborate effectively and overcome challenges through teamwork.
Adewunmi’s motivation stemmed from his humble background and his parents’ sacrifices, which fueled his drive to excel. He expressed gratitude for their unwavering support, as well as the encouragement he received from friends.
Looking ahead, Adewunmi aspires to pursue advanced studies in Philosophy, with a focus on ethics and related fields.
