University of Ibadan students staged a peaceful protest over an 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital, caused by unpaid electricity bills owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.
Students of the University of Ibadan held a peaceful protest on Wednesday to voice their frustration over an 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.
The outage, which began in late 2024, has severely impacted medical students relying on UCH as their teaching hospital. Reports indicate the disruption is due to unpaid electricity bills owed by UCH to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
Bolaji Aweda, President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, led the protest and highlighted the adverse effects of the prolonged blackout.
“We are here to protest because our students are suffering. For 82 days, UCH has been without electricity because it cannot pay its bills to IBEDC. The power company has made it clear that services will only resume once the debt is cleared,” Aweda stated.
The demonstration underscores growing concerns about the challenges facing students and the broader implications of unresolved financial issues at UCH.
