The Management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has allayed fears among medical graduands and their parents, dismissing as unfounded the rumors that 44 doctors who completed their studies last year would be delayed until 2026 for their professional induction.

In a press statement signed by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, on February 16, 2026, the University clarified the situation following misleading tweets on X (formerly Twitter). The rumors suggested that the remaining graduands would be lumped together with the set completing their MB, BS programme this year for induction.

Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Biodun Suleiman Alabi, who spoke on behalf of the Management, explained the root of the delay. He revealed that out of 194 students who sat for the final MB, BS examinations, 175 passed outrightly while 19 had resits. However, due to the quota approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), only 150 of the successful candidates could be inducted in November last year.

“We were told to rank them and the first 150 of the 175 were inducted in November last year,” Prof. Alabi stated. “Even though there was a pronouncement by the Federal Government that the quota for Medical students’ admission would be doubled, that is yet to be implemented. We were assured that the remaining 25 that passed and the other 19 that had resit exams would be inducted at a later date.”

Prof. Alabi emphasized that the University has since been in constant communication with the MDCN to advocate for the induction of the remaining graduands. He described the social media rumors as baseless, noting that advocacy efforts are ongoing.

“The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, and the management team are working assiduously to ensure that the remaining 44 are inducted soon,” he added.

In a proactive move to prevent future occurrences, the Vice Chancellor has directed that steps be taken to invite the MDCN for the reaccreditation of the University’s Medicine and Surgery programme. This, according to Prof. Alabi, is aimed at increasing the current admission quota from 150 to a higher carrying capacity.

The University appealed to parents and students to remain patient, assuring them that the matter is being resolved.
