AKSU Secures NUC’s Approval for new Medical and Science Programmes

The management of Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU has secured the National Universities Commission NUC’s approval for new medical and science programmes.

This is to inform the general public, especially prospective candidates that, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval to Akwa Ibom State University to offer new undergraduate programmes in Basic Medical, Health and Physical Sciences, effective from the 2025/2026 Academic Session. The newly approved programmes are:

  • B. NSc. Nursing Science
  • B.PH. Public Health
  • B.EHS. Environmental Health Science
  • B.MLS. Medical Laboratory Science
  • B.CHS. Community Health Science
  • B.HIM. Health Information Management
  • B.Sc. Science Laboratory Technology

These programmes were approved in response to the developing trends and critical manpower needs in the health and medical sciences sectors. These programmes are globally relevant, highly marketable, and they align with our commitment to expanding access to quality tertiary education and mounting cutting-edge programmes that will prepare the next generation for leadership.

Particularly, students enrolled in the Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) programmes at Akwa Ibom State University have the rare opportunity to specialize in eight options, which are:

  • Science Laboratory Technology (Biology Technology Option): The area of study focuses on biological systems, laboratory techniques in botany, zoology, and applied life sciences.
  • Science Laboratory Technology (Biochemistry Technology Option): The area of study emphasizes on biochemical processes, molecular biology, and applications in food, pharmaceutical, and medical sciences.
  • Science Laboratory Technology (Chemistry Technology Option): The area provides training in analytical, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry with industrial applications.
  • Science Laboratory Technology (Chemical/Petroleum Technology Option): Studies in this area concentrate on chemical engineering principles, petroleum exploration, refining processes, and energy-related laboratory practices.
  • Science Laboratory Technology (Geology/Mining Technology Option): Studies in this area cover earth sciences, mineral exploration, mining techniques, and environmental geology.
  • Science Laboratory Technology (Microbiology/Biotechnology Technology Option): This area focuses on microbial sciences, biotechnological innovations, and applications in health, agriculture, and industry.
  • Science Laboratory Technology (Physics/Electronics Technology Option): Studies in this area offer specialization in applied physics, instrumentation, and electronics for industrial and scientific applications.
  • Science Laboratory Technology (Physiology/Pharmacology Technology Option): This area of study provides knowledge of human physiology, pharmacological principles, and laboratory techniques in biomedical sciences.

Accordingly, applications are now open for admission into the above listed programmes.
