First class graduates should be teachers, says schoolowner

The Proprietress,  De Joyland Schools, Yaba, Lagos, Mrs Abimbola Osagie, has said first class graduates should be encouraged into the teaching profession.

Osagie said this at the 9th graduation/end of the year party of the school, adding that it would help solve the dearth in the education sector in the country.

She maintained that if the best graduates were teachers, it would impact on the performances of the students, adding that the quality of education of a country would determine the progress of the nation.

She said, “They always push those who do not meet up with admission requirements to Faculty of Education and this is wrong. The best should be fixed in to the Faculty of Education in tertiary institutions.

“At the end of the day we will have  teachers who are the best instead of those who do not have interest in the profession and are not competent academically.”

She also called for the implementation of the grade 6 policy, urging the government to make it a law in private schools.

“If government make it a law in every private school, parents will stop making their children skip grade 6.”

Osagie also complained that the government was not supporting the private schools as it should, adding that they were partners with government.

While speaking on the uniqueness of the school, she said, “We are passionate about helping to lay firm foundation for the Nigerian children. I get to see children graduate from the university and could not read and write. I feel we can make impact as a school. We have children whose parents relocated and are doing better than those they met in abroad. We believe that every child can do well.”
