Cursory: Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has emerged winner of the 2023 University of Ilorin Mass Communication Department’s Pitch-A-Ton competition held on the main campus of the University of Ilorin. The competition is aimed at helping women grow their business, it is the the largest business growth platform for women and also issues free mini MBA certificate to participants and awards grants too. After the competition, the participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity, pointing out that it has equipped them for future endeavors.


The Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has won the Pitch-A-Ton competition held by the University of Ilorin’s Mass Communication department in 2023.Kwara State Polytechnic achieved a total of 217 points in the Pitch-A-Ton competition, which was held on Wednesday at the University of Ilorin, defeating seven other competing institutions.
With a total of 194 points, the University of Ilorin finished in second, and Summit University, Offa came in third with a score of 184.The program was created to give the town and gown a platform to come together, according to Dr. Kehinde Kadiri, Head of Department, Mass Communication, University of Ilorin.
She said it was also organised for the experts in the advertising industry to come out and teach the University community on how advertising is been managed in the real world.
“One thing I have realised is that there is a difference between theory and practice. What we teach our students is different and there is a huge gap between the class and what is on the field.
“The platform is to provide a seamless transition for the students to understand how the game is been played in the real world and to give them the required knowledge they need before they get into the industry” Dr Kadiri said.
Eniola Oluwatomisin, a competitor from the department of mass communication at Lens Polytechnic in Offa, characterized the occasion as enjoyable and overwhelming after competing against peers from various universities.She claimed that since they had studied advertising in class the previous year, it was beneficial to compete with others and put what they had learned to the test in the real world.
Fatimah Bashir, a participant from the Fountain University in Osogbo, said the event was enjoyable because it broadened her horizons.Because they also learned from the other participants in the program, Bashir claimed that the competition had better equipped them for upcoming activities.
Mrs. Biodun Adefila, one of the judges for the Pitch-A-Ton, expressed her admiration for what she observed throughout the event, leading her to conclude that significant effort had been expended in educating the kids on the fundamentals of marketing communication.
“Looking at perfection is not really there but they have a good understanding and idea of what they are supposing to be doing” Adefila said.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of O2 Academy, Ozoemena Mbanefo, announced a scholarship for two students from the winning institution, Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, as a gesture of appreciation for what the students were able to present at the event.According to information obtained, participating schools were Thomas Adewumi University, Oko, Lens Polytechnic, Offa, Redeemers University, Ede, Osun State, Fountain University, Osun, Samuel Ajayi Crowther, and University of Ilorin.
