Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, was shut down by the state government after student protests over its use as a temporary NYSC orientation camp turned chaotic, leading to security breaches, injuries, and concerns over safety and poor handling of the situation.

The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, following student protests over the use of the institution as a temporary National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp. The protests led to a security breach, injuries, and chaos on campus, prompting Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to shut down the institution to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The management of the polytechnic had granted students a three-week break to facilitate the NYSC orientation exercise, but some students rejected the decision, citing concerns over safety, welfare, and academic disruption. The protest turned chaotic when security operatives allegedly fired tear gas canisters into the campus, including student hostels, affecting several students and staff.
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) condemned the use of force against protesting students, insisting that the demonstration was peaceful. The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also condemned the use of excessive force, accusing the state government of poor planning and insensitivity.
The incident has raised concerns over security management and student welfare in tertiary institutions across the state. Stakeholders are calling for dialogue and sustainable solutions to protect both academic activities and public safety.
The Kwara State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. The development has sparked outrage, with many questioning the government’s handling of the situation.
The closure of the polytechnic has disrupted academic activities, and students are urged to remain calm as efforts are made to resolve the matter amicably.
