Cursory: Hajara Dan’azumi, a 19-year-old Nigerian, won a prestigious Quran memorization competition in Jordan, earning a 5 million naira cash prize and a full scholarship up to the Ph.D. level. Representing Nigeria, she triumphed over 40 contestants from 38 countries with a remarkable score of 99.5.


Hajara Dan’azumi, an exceptional 19-year-old Nigerian woman, distinguished herself as one of the top Quran memorizers globally by clinching victory in the annual Quran memorization competition held in the Kingdom of Jordan.
Her remarkable achievement earned her a cash prize of 5 million naira and a full scholarship up to the Ph.D. level. Currently a second-year student of Botany at Gombe State University (GSU), Hajara emerged as the overall winner of the Women’s International Hashemite Competition for Memorization of the 60 Hizb with Tajwid Holy Qur’an in Jordan, surpassing 40 contestants from 38 countries at the 18th edition of the event. Hajara, who also attends Abubakar Siddiq Islamiyya School in Gombe, was chosen to represent Nigeria at the competition.
The competition, held from February 17 to 22, 2024, was organized by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs of Jordan under Royal patronage, demonstrating reverence and appreciation for the Qur’an as a guiding principle in life.
Hajara achieved an outstanding score of 99.5, securing Nigeria’s victory in the contest. Notably, in 2020, she attained the 4th position in the 40 Hizb category with a score of 97.1 at the 34th National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Lagos State.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State expressed his delight at Hajara’s accomplishment, extending congratulations to her family and teachers while commending her dedication and diligence in mastering the Qur’an.
Emphasizing the significance of nurturing and supporting young people’s educational pursuits, especially in religious studies, Governor Yahaya stressed its pivotal role in character development and societal advancement.
” It plays a vital role in shaping their character and contributing to the development of the society,” he said.
As a token of recognition, he awarded Hajara a cash prize of 5 million naira and a full scholarship covering her education from her current academic level to the Ph.D.
Additionally, the governor allocated another 5 million naira to Abubakar Siddiq Islamiyya, the Qur’anic school, acknowledging its instrumental role in Hajara’s upbringing and pledging to enhance its operations to further empower students.
