Dr. Nurudeen Adekunle, an orthopaedic surgeon at Ogun State Hospital, denied slapping a nursing student, explaining that he only asked the student to leave the theatre for inappropriate behavior, with an investigation finding no evidence of misconduct.

Dr. Nurudeen Adekunle, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Ogun State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, has denied allegations of slapping a male nursing student, explaining that he only asked the student to leave the operating theatre due to inappropriate behavior.
The accusation led the state chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives to protest, demanding disciplinary action against the surgeon. However, Adekunle dismissed the claims as unfounded, asserting that no physical confrontation occurred.
Recounting the incident, Adekunle said, “On the day of the surgery, I was preparing to operate on three patients while teaching both medical and nursing students. A male nursing student made an inappropriate comment, which he later claimed was a joke. I corrected him, emphasizing the importance of respect for senior practitioners.”
He clarified that his interaction was intended as discipline, not aggression. “I placed my hand on his shoulder while instructing him to leave the theatre, and let go shortly after. Four days later, I heard rumors that I slapped him, which is entirely false,” he said.
The surgeon criticized the spread of misinformation, noting that some reports inaccurately claimed he slapped a female nurse. “The person involved is a 21-year-old male nursing student. I believed I could guide him through correction, but I did not slap him,” he reiterated.
Adekunle added that the hospital’s Chief Medical Director investigated the matter and found no evidence to support the allegations.
The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Ogun State, Dr. Luqman Ogunjimi, backed Adekunle’s statement, calling the accusations exaggerated. “There was no physical altercation; the issue has been blown out of proportion,” Ogunjimi said.
