The Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Prof. Babatola Ayodele, revealed on Monday that only 9,000 out of over 29,000 candidates who selected the institution in the last Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board exercise secured admission.

Ayodele attributed the university’s growing appeal to its positive developments, stating, “Our school is a brand. The fortunes have improved, and the morale of staff is high.”
Speaking at a press conference ahead of EKSU’s 29th convocation ceremony, Ayodele highlighted the institution’s improved rankings by various bodies, which have enhanced its attractiveness to prospective students.
During the convocation, scheduled for March 28 and 29, the university will confer a total of 16,446 degrees, comprising 15,981 first degrees and 465 higher degrees.
Additionally, honorary doctorates will be awarded to three distinguished Nigerians: Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, and the Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Industry, Dr. Mansur Muhtar.
The VC encouraged prospective students to prioritize EKSU when applying for admission, noting the high level of competition.
“Even now, as we near the end of the first semester, some candidates are still reaching out to seek admission. I advise those interested in EKSU to choose it as their first choice due to its high subscription and competitive selection process,” he said.
On the university’s ranking, Ayodele stated, “The Times Higher Education, in its latest ranking, rated EKSU as the number one state university in Nigeria among the over 275 universities ranked.
Additionally, Webometrics, Web of Universities, and US News & World Report have consistently ranked EKSU among the top three state universities in Nigeria.”
Acknowledging Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s efforts in improving the university’s financial support, Ayodele noted the state government’s increase of EKSU’s monthly subvention from N260 million to N410 million.
However, he appealed for further increments, emphasizing that additional funding would enable the institution to achieve even greater milestones.
“We appreciate the government’s support but still appeal for an increase in subvention. With more funding, we can enhance our services and make even better use of the resources at our disposal,” he said.
Regarding discipline within the institution, Ayodele stated that the university has taken strict measures to maintain order among staff and students.
He disclosed that one individual had been dismissed for sexual misconduct, three others for abandoning their duty posts, and three staff members barred from holding positions of responsibility for three years.
Additionally, nine staff had their appointments terminated, while 21 others received official warnings for various offences.
“At the same time, we have also recognized and rewarded staff members who have distinguished themselves in their roles and are qualified for promotion,” he concluded.
