Plateau Varsity VC urges NASS To Pass National Building Code Bill

Vice Chancellor, Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, Professor Yohanna Izam, has called on the National Assembly to pass the National Building Code Bill in order to save lives and property. 

Izam made the call in an interview with newsmen in Jos shortly after receiving a leadership award for meritorious service to the Nigerian Institute of Building from the Plateau Chapter of the Institute. 

According to him, the country had lost several precious, energetic and patriotic citizens to unnecessary building collapses within the last decade and as such, something drastic must be done to save lives from untimely death. 

He said this informed his call on the lawmakers to pass the National Building Code Bill, without further delay. 

The vice chancellor, who is the First Vice President of the Nigerian Institute of Building, also called on the Plateau government to domesticate the Urban and Regional Planning Laws towards checkmating the menace of building collapse.

“Enforcement of existing laws and regulations must be done to eradicate quacks in the building profession and maintain sanity. 

“The problem we have as builders is that the building sites are not regulated by certified professionals, who should know the building production processes,” he said. 

Also speaking, Kunle Awobodu, the Institute’s president, said that frequent building failure in the country was due, majorly, to quackery. 

“It is an abnormality that should not be allowed to continue, especially in a society where the rule of law prevails,” he said. 

Awobodu, who spoke through Izam, said professional builders must take their rightful place in the building production process. 

He added that they must strive to meet the expectations of the populace in constant and successful delivery of quality, affordable, safe and durable buildings. 

“Any nation bereft of building codes is vulnerable to inappropriate building construction, hence our clamour for us to have ours in Nigeria as soon as possible.”
