The University of Cape Coast confirmed that Vice-Chancellor Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong remains in his position, clarifying that no decision has been made regarding the termination or extension of his tenure amid ongoing legal challenges.
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has clarified that its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, remains in his position, contrary to recent reports suggesting his tenure extension had been voided. The university’s governing council had not convened to discuss or make a decision regarding the termination of Prof. Boampong’s appointment.
Reports had emerged claiming that the extension of Prof. Boampong’s tenure was nullified. However, UCC management released a statement asserting that no such decision had been made and that the Vice-Chancellor had not been dismissed. The statement further explained that while Prof. Boampong’s initial four-year term, which began on August 1, 2020, is set to end on July 31, 2024, he could apply for an extension, as permitted by the university’s statutes.
Legal challenges have also arisen, with John Mevemeo, a resident of Millennium City-Kasoa in the Central Region, filing a lawsuit against UCC. The lawsuit seeks to prevent Prof. Boampong from continuing in his role. According to university regulations, a Vice-Chancellor’s tenure can be renewed for up to three years, provided the individual does not exceed the statutory retirement age of 60. Prof. Boampong is scheduled to turn 60 on September 18, 2025.
The UCC administration emphasized that any decisions regarding the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure would be made following due process and in accordance with university regulations.
