University of Ibadan Graduate Shares Why She Repeated Year Two and Won Award for Final-Year Project

University of Ibadan graduate MoyosoreOluwa Onipede repeated Year Two after changing her course from Russian to Communication and Language Arts and later won an award for the best final-year project in political communication while building a successful career in the entertainment industry.

A graduate of the University of Ibadan, MoyosoreOluwa Onipede, has reflected on her undergraduate journey, explaining how changing her course of study forced her to repeat her second year before she eventually earned recognition for her outstanding final-year research project.

In a post shared on LinkedIn, MoyosoreOluwa revealed that she was initially admitted to study Russian, with French as a minor. However, after spending time in the programme, she realised her interests and career goals had changed.

She decided to transfer to the Department of Communication and Language Arts, a decision that required her to repeat Year Two. Although the move meant watching many of her classmates progress while she started over, she said it was the right choice for her future despite the emotional and academic challenges involved.

According to her, beginning again was a humbling experience, but she believed it was more important to pursue a path that aligned with her passion than to complete a programme that no longer reflected her aspirations.

While studying, she also built a career in the entertainment industry, balancing academic responsibilities with professional opportunities. She worked with late singer Mohbad, produced four editions of Bella Shmurda’s Tension Rave, coordinated welfare for several film productions, completed an internship with TRACE, organised a university tour, produced concerts at the University of Ibadan, and supported numerous entertainment events across Nigeria.

Beyond her entertainment activities, she also participated actively in student leadership. During her second year in her new department, she served as Deputy Spokesperson of her faculty’s Legislative Council, where she developed communication, leadership, and representation skills.

Her academic journey reached another major milestone when her final-year project received the Brigadier Abdulkarim Adisa Prize for the best research project on a political communication topic relevant to Nigeria. She described the recognition as more than an academic achievement, saying it confirmed that choosing to begin again had been worthwhile.

Her inspiring story attracted praise from many people on social media, with several users congratulating her for remaining determined despite the setback of repeating a year and applauding her ability to combine academic excellence with a successful career in the entertainment industry.
