The University of Nigeria, Nsukka has refuted a viral, photoshopped image falsely linking student Rebecca Yahoma to a relationship after her outing with YouTuber Asherkine, condemning it as defamation and urging the public to disregard the misleading claims.


The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), through its Department of Mass Communication, has officially discredited a viral photo that falsely links one of its students, Ifeme Rebecca Yahoma — popularly known as Becky — to a romantic relationship narrative following her publicized outing with content creator and YouTuber, Asherkine.
The controversy began after Asherkine visited UNN and treated Becky to an elaborate day out, which included a shopping spree and the gift of a high-end smartphone. During a recorded exchange, Becky confirmed she was single and had never been in a relationship.
Shortly afterward, a photo surfaced online showing Becky with an unidentified man, prompting social media users to accuse her of lying about her relationship status.
In response to the backlash, the Mass Communication department released a formal statement denouncing the photo as a doctored image and labeling the rumors as baseless and harmful. The statement reads in part:
“Our attention has been drawn to a viral post circulating across social media platforms, falsely suggesting that our student, Ifeme Rebecca Yahoma, misrepresented her relationship status during Asherkine’s visit.“
“These claims are completely unfounded and defamatory.“
“Following an internal review, we found that the viral photo was digitally manipulated and spread by one Mr. Kenny, who falsely claims to be her boyfriend. His actions represent a deliberate effort to damage her reputation.“
The department further condemned the act, describing it as a case of character assassination and a misuse of digital platforms to spread misinformation.
“Becky is a respected student within our department, and we will not tolerate any campaign aimed at discrediting her based on falsehoods. We urge the public to disregard these malicious posts and refrain from sharing such content.“
“Anyone found guilty of continuing to spread this doctored material may face legal consequences.“
The department concluded by calling for ethical conduct on social media and a united front against defamation and cyberbullying.
