CURSORY: A Nigerian Professor of history has suggested that the study of IFA and witchcraft be considered as part of university courses.


On Monday, January 15th 2024, Toyin Falola a professor of history in UNILAG has made a statement during his speech at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) 54th Convocation lecture on “Decolonising African Higher Education for Transformational Development.”
Toyin Falola has called on Nigerian universities to adapt the study of IFA and witchcrafts as a degree awarding course, in addition to science and economics.
The professor of history also recommended that the use of indigenous language as a means of teaching and interacting with students and lecturers should be adapted, according to Nigeria tribune.
He said that during the colonial masters system the African education system was not set up for enlightenment, nor was it set up for the advancement or benefit of Nigeria.
But that education was designed to achieve economic and government ambitions and the aspirations of the Colonia masters.
Prof.Falola added that even after gaining independence, the elite of the country are still used by the whites to advance the economic and political objectives of the European countries.
Lastly, he called on the National University Commission (NUC) to allow the university have more freedom to design their own curriculum based on their choices.
