James Stewart, a passionate young man from Maryland, has fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a medical doctor and matched into his top-choice General Surgery residency at Yale University.
James Stewart, a determined and brilliant young man from Howard County, Maryland, has achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a medical doctor, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Meharry Medical College.
James’ journey to medicine began in early childhood. From the age of three, he envisioned himself wearing a white coat—not as a fantasy, but as a calling. He began his academic path at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he earned a degree in Biological Sciences, setting the stage for his entrance into medical school.
The dream became even more vivid during his final year of high school when he witnessed a triple bypass surgery firsthand. That experience ignited a lasting passion in him, confirming that surgery was his purpose.
Following his medical school graduation, James experienced a life-changing moment on National Match Day—when U.S. medical graduates find out where they will complete their residency training. With joy and tears, he learned that he had matched into his top choice: a General Surgery residency at Yale University.
“One of the happiest moments of my life. I’m proud to announce that I matched at my #1 choice and will be attending Yale University for my surgical training,” he shared.
James acknowledges that the road to success wasn’t without challenges. There were times he was told to give up, to aim lower—but he chose to believe in his dream. Inspired by mentors like Dr. Nita Ahuja, Chair of Surgery at Yale, he now aims to pay it forward.
“For me, this is only the beginning. When you make it to the top, your job is to turn around and help the next person climb,” he said.
