PLASU Senate Approves Statute for Medical College, Sets Convocation Date

The Senate of Plateau State University (PLASU) Bokkos took a major step toward establishing its College of Medicine and Health Sciences during its 96th regular meeting on August 25.

The Senate approved the draft statute for the proposed college, bringing the university closer to offering degrees in Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, and other health-related fields.

The statute, submitted by the Provost of the proposed college, Professor Caleb Mpyet, was unanimously approved under the leadership of Senate Chairman and PLASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shedrack Gaya Best after rigorous scrutiny.

In addition, the Senate approved November 28 and 29, 2025, as the tentative dates for the university’s 8th and 9th combined convocation ceremony. During the meeting, the Senate also approved a sole nominee for an honorary doctorate degree and selected a guest speaker for the event.

In his remarks during the meeting, Professor Best appreciated faculty members for their dedication to duty, crediting their efforts for the university’s growing reputation. During the meeting, Senate was informed by the university’s ICT Directorate that student applications have more than doubled from approximately 5,200 to 11,692 since the Post-UTME screening began on August 4th. The surge is evident in the number of applications for course and institution changes.
In line with this growth, Professor Best announced plans to fully digitize the university’s operations.

“We will put the infrastructure in place so that everything that has to do with students, from admission to registration, examination, graduation, and transcripts, is streamlined under one system without any difficulty,” he said.

Other issues covered during the Senate meeting include ongoing second-semester examinations, which are scheduled to be completed by August 27. Additionally, the meeting recognized recent agricultural breakthroughs by the Faculty of Agriculture and held a moment of silence to honor faculty members who had recently passed away.
