The Federal Government has announced Major Restructuring of Governing Councils and Leadership Across Federal Universities


In a significant move aimed at strengthening governance and leadership in Nigeria’s Federal universities, the Federal Government has approved a major restructuring involving the dissolution, reassignment, and appointment of key officials across some institutions.

University of Abuja (Now Yakubu Gowon University)
The Federal Government has dissolved the entire Governing Council, both external and internal. Senator Lanre Tejuoso has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor, transitioning from his previous role as the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
Additionally, Prof. Lar Patricia Manko has been appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor for a six-month tenure with the condition that she will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice-Chancellor position whenever it is advertised by the Governing Council. Furthermore, Prof. Maikudi has been removed as the Vice-Chancellor.
University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
Engr. Akin Ojo, who previously served as the Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Lokoja, has been reassigned as the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN.
Additionally, Gen. Ike Nwachukwu, who formerly held the position of Pro-Chancellor at UNN, has been reassigned as the new Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo. Also Prof. Oguejiofu T. Ujam has been appointed as the new Acting Vice-Chancellor for a six-month period, with the condition that he will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice-Chancellor position when it is advertised while the tenure of the current Acting Vice-Chancellor, which expires on February 14, 2025, will not be renewed.
Other Appointments
At Alvan Ikoku University of Education, the Federal Government has appointed Senator Sani Stores as the new Pro-Chancellor. Similarly, at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, the Federal Government has appointed Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi as the new Pro-Chancellor of the institution.
Meanwhile, at the Federal University of Lokoja, the Federal Government has appointed Prof. Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi as the new Pro-Chancellor, marking a new phase in the university’s governance structure.
The Federal Government remains committed to enhancing the governance structures in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, ensuring transparency, accountability, and excellence in university administration.
