FUHSO’s Largest-Ever Matriculation: 1,642 Students Sworn In as VC Unveils New Programmes

The Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), Benue State, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, matriculated a total of one thousand, six hundred and forty-two (1,642) fresh students, reaffirming the institution’s mandate to advance medical education and significantly reduce medical tourism abroad.

The matriculating students were admitted into the Faculty of Science; Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences; Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences; and the Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.

The matriculation oath was administered by the University’s Legal Officer, Barrister Ene Oyigboja. Delivering his address titled “When Action Aligns with Motive and Purpose,” the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Aba Uba, charged the new students to take their studies seriously and uphold the guiding principles of the University. He emphasized discipline, vision, character alignment, and clarity of purpose as essential pillars for academic excellence and personal development, urging students to key into the University’s renewed commitment to quality and integrity.

The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that FUHSO currently has a student population of over 2,200. He further revealed that six new academic programmes have been introduced under his administration, with twenty-two additional programmes at various stages of development and scheduled to commence in the 2026 academic session.

Professor Uba expressed profound gratitude to the University’s Governing Council, led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Professor Mohammad Audu, FMAN; the Matriculation Guest Lecturer, Professor Martins Aghaji; as well as staff and students of the University for their sustained support. He called for continued cooperation in advancing the University’s vision and mandate.

In his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Professor Mohammad Audu, FMAN, assured the University community that FUHSO would relocate to its permanent site at Akwete-Akpa in early 2026. He affirmed that the future of the University is bright and pledged the Council’s unwavering support to the Vice-Chancellor and Management to ensure FUHSO attains its rightful place among Nigeria’s leading universities of health sciences.

Earlier, the Matriculation Guest Lecturer, Professor Martins Aghaji of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, advocated for FUHSO to be strongly ICT-driven. He noted that with the right structures in place and the wealth of experience of the Vice-Chancellor, the University has the potential to evolve into a hub for medical tourism within Nigeria.

The renowned Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery further called for strict adherence to standards in student admission and staff recruitment, as well as periodic reviews of the academic curriculum to ensure alignment with contemporary global best practices.

The just-concluded matriculation ceremony is unarguably unprecedented in scale and standards. The impressive turnout, cutting across all walks of life, is a testament to the inclusive, innovative, and transformational leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Aba Uba, his management team, and the entire University leadership.
