The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, has cautioned students against taking the law into their own hands, saying that the University has put in place adequate measures to address grievances.

Speaking during an orientation programme organised for fresh students by the Students Integrity Club (SIC), the vice-chancellor said that mechanisms such as the Speak-Up Programme and Suggestions Box were introduced by his administration proactively to deal with complaints emanating from the students, urging the students to maximally take advantage of the opportunities to make their complaints known to the authorities in the University.
Abdul Rahman said: “We introduced these avenues to hear your concerns because you’re the major stakeholders in our community and, in fact, I see you all as part of the Management of this University. Therefore, you have no reason to carry any placard or raise any dust to get your concerns addressed.”
The vice-chancellor warned students against allowing themselves to be used by those he referred to as “the enemies of the system,” calling on the students to dedicate themselves to their education to become successful in life.
He encouraged them not to be faced by seemingly difficult challenges, saying: “Don’t be discouraged when the going gets tough, be determined, strong and confident to conquer challenges.”
He, also, urged the students to be disciplined, respectful and responsive to the core values of FULafia, namely, integrity, innovation and excellence.
In her lecture centered on how to achieve examination and academic excellence, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Professor Aleruchi Chuku, called on the students to apply their knowledge to their everyday activities, urging them to have an effective reading habit.
Aleruchi said that to be successful, the students must interact with their peers to get the benefits of one another.
She appealed to students to be patient in their learning environment, saying that: “Success is a step-by-step process.”
Also, speaking, Professor Adam Adebayo Sirajudeen, the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Committee, warned students against exhibiting dubious character, saying that character defines who a person is.
He said that the University has zero-tolerance for all forms of corruption related activities.
Earlier, the President of the SIC, Memunat Mohammed Eleojo, welcomed the vice-chancellor, Aleruchi, Adam, staff and students to the venue of the event, Mallam Adamu Adamu Lecture Hall, thanking them for coming.
Memunat, specifically, thanked the vice-chancellor for establishing the SIC “three years ago and helping to make this orientation programme a reality.”
