LASU Unveils New Multipurpose Smart ID Card for Staff & Students
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, on Thursday, 28th December 2023, unveiled the new multipurpose Smart ID card for staff and students of the Lagos State University.
The Smart ID Card is designed to replace the mono-functional ID cards currently being used by staff and students.
To introduce the card to the University Community, the Vice Chancellor led other members of the university management team to demonstrate one of the functionalities of the card as an Attendance Management System for large students’ classes, shortly before the commencement of the Senate meeting on Thursday.

To facilitate the demonstration, an Attendance Management Device was already installed at the Senate’s Secretariat, which the VC, the DVC, Administration, Prof. Adenike Boyo, DVC Academics, Prof. Folusho Omobitan and the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel FANU used to clock into the chambers. Members of Senate commended the VC for making the vision of the Smart Card a reality and gave kudos to the ICT for the development.
To use the card, a user will be required to tap the ID card on the installed device. The device will reveal the name and other information of the holders and record their attendance.
Following the successful test of the Smart ID Card, the Vice Chancellor noted that the card would be produced and issued in batches for users. The first batch of users includes members of the university management, members of the university Senate, deputy registrars, and newly admitted 100-level students.
According to the Director ICT, Prof. Toyin Enikuomehin, who spoke during the unveiling of the multipurpose card at the Senate Chamber, the new ID card will serve as an identification for staff and students and an attendance management system for large classes. In addition, the card, he said, can be used as an ATM card attached to a bank account and powered by Interswitch. He therefore urged members of staff and students to provide their National Identity Number (NIN) to facilitate the activation of the card and its subsequent release.
The first batch of the new Smart ID Card is expected to be rolled out from mid-January, 2024.
