Mercy Ojunde, ‘determined‘ to put her name on this map of brilliant students, is now more closer to this ‘dream‘
Mercy who bagged a first class honors from Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, vowed that she will do her MSc/PhD programme abroad, because she is “passionate about science and sovling global health problems.“
A journey which definetely hasn’t been all bed of roses, has ended in joy, as she bags a PhD scholarship to study at West Virginia University (WVU), where she will also be working as a Graduate Research Assistant.
Taking to LinkedIn to share her story, Mercy wrote: “After my experience at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), I became passionate about science and solving #global health problems.
“I finished my first degree in Microbiology and graduated with first-class honours, and then I began to ask myself what next. Then, I started exploring MSc./Ph.D. opportunities abroad because I was determined to study for my MSc. and Ph.D. abroad with sponsorship from international organisations.
“I started my applications, and fortunately, I got the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships in 2021 to study MSc. Biotechnology at the University of the West of Scotland, UK.
“It was a great opportunity to understand the teaching/learning style abroad. My experience at the University of the West of Scotland will be shared later🤓🤓. I am grateful to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for the opportunity given to study outside my home country and also contribute to knowledge.

“I entered the Uk in September 2021, and trust me, the semester already began with many #assessments. During this period, applications for Fall 2022 in the US were already opened, and I held on to the vision and dream which kept me going.
“I submitted my Ph.D. application to West Virginia University in October 2021. I also got application fee #waivers to apply to four other schools, but I concentrated more on West Virginia University (WVU).
“Eventually, I got an interview invite from West Virginia University and was interviewed on the 30th of November, 2021. Guess what? 😂😂 I got my PhD admission with a graduate research assistantship position and my funding letter via email on the 21st of December, 2021.
“I got it so early right?😂 I did the rest of the processing in the UK, including my VISA. Is God not wonderful? God is great🙌. I am grateful to God Almighty for the journey thus far, while I keep trusting Him.
“I am excited to announce that I have started my fully funded PhD program in Biomedical Science (Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis Program) at West Virginia University, USA. I want to say thank you to Yetunde Kayode for the SOP review.
