University of Maiduguri , UNIMAID Gets NUC’s Approval for 5 new Academic Programmes


The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially granted approval to the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) for the establishment of five new undergraduate programmes at its main campus.
The approval was communicated via an official letter dated February 3, 2026, signed by Abubakar M. Girei, the Director of Academic Planning, on behalf of the Executive Secretary. This decision follows a successful resource verification visit by a panel of experts who assessed the human and material resources available for these courses.
Approved Full-Time Programmes
The following courses have been approved to commence effective from the 2025/2026 academic session:
- B.Sc. Water Sanitation and Hygiene
- B.Sc. Journalism and Media Studies
- B.Sc. Broadcasting
- B.Sc. Local Government and Development Studies
- B.A. History and Diplomatic Studies
Terms and Conditions
The NUC clarified that the current approval covers full-time mode only. The commission emphasized that the university must seek further processing and notification before any of these programmes can be offered on a part-time basis.
“The programmes shall bear only the approved titles and nomenclature and any change will require the approval of the Commission.”
The University of Maiduguri has been enjoined to continue providing adequate resources to ensure the steady development and growth of these newly approved departments.
