FUO Female Researcher Wins £27,000 UK Research Grant with Cambridge University Counterpart

Professor Nusrah Afolabi-Balogun from the Department of Biological Sciences at Fountain University Osogbo and Dr. Sara Pensa from the Department of Pharmacology at Cambridge University, UK, has been awarded a £27,000 equivalent to N43,982,136.00 grant. 

The grant, awarded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF), aims to bolster their ongoing efforts in combating cervical cancer in Nigeria.

The joint venture, fueled by an initial injection from the Cambridge-Africa Alborada Fund, is focused on “Building capacity for the early diagnosis of Cervical Cancer in Nigeria.” This initiative marks a crucial step forward in the fight against one of the most prevalent and deadly forms of cancer affecting women in Nigeria.

The Vice Chancellor of Fountain University, Prof. Olayinka Ramota Karim expressed her profound satisfaction with the achievement. “This remarkable development underscores the caliber of our faculty and the importance of international collaboration in scientific research,” she commented. “We are immensely proud of Professor Afolabi-Balogun and her contributions to advancing healthcare in Nigeria,” she added.

With this significant infusion of funding and expertise, Professor Afolabi-Balogun and Dr. Pensa are poised to make substantial strides in the fight against cervical cancer, bringing hope to countless women in Nigeria and beyond.
